LOVE YOUR HEART: I HAVE NO ANGINAL PAIN. HOWEVER, MY DOCTOR SAYS I HAVE SILENT ISCHEMIA'. WHY SHOULD I TAKE MEDICINES IF I HAVE NO SYMPTOMS?
Silent Myocardial Ischemia' is the medical term used to describe the condition where although the ECG, stress test or Holter test show that the heart is not getting adequate blood, the patient does not experience angina. Such patients are unfortunate since their pain perception mechanism (which is protective for the body) is faulty Therefore, in addition to coming to medical attention later, such patients often ignore their doctor's advice & default on treatment. Several medical trials have confirmed that patients with silent myocardial ischemia do worse than patients who do no experience this phenomenon. In fact, such patients can even suffer from painless; heart attacks, called 'silent myocardial infarctions'.
